Lagniappe

Here is a little lagniappe that might come in handy during your visit!

About Us

We are so excited to invite you to stay at the River House! It has been a dream of my brother and I to have a place of our own on the river, and now we finally do!  Our family grew up boating and skiing on the Diversion Canal and are thrilled to be able to now share that experience with our kids – and with our guests! From our family to yours – bien venue!

Wildlife

One of our favorite parts about this area is watching the wildlife!  We have seen turtles, bunnies and alligators on the golf cart ride.  Also keep an eye out for bald eagles!  There is a nest somewhere along the Petit Amite River that runs behind the River House.

Alligators.  These creatures are amazing to watch (from a safe distance)!  Typically alligators are very afraid of people and will run away when they feel threatened, but we don’t recommend testing this theory!  Always check your surroundings before entering the water and remember to NEVER feed the gators. Especially in areas where people swim.

Egrets.  These beautiful birds are some of our favorites to watch.  Snow white in color, they stand out amid the greens of the swamp.  They tend to stalk the edge of the water looking for fish, and if you watch them long enough you can usually see them snag a few!

Blue Heron.  The Blue Heron is a huge and majestic bird.  Like the egret, the blue heron stalks the edge of the water for dinner.  These birds are truly gorgeous! They have a super large wingspan, and watching them fly is truly a treat!

Wood Ducks.  Wood ducks can be seen all around the bayou with their beautiful colors and quick flapping wings. During the springtime be on the lookout for their babies!

Critters

While we do treat The River House for pests quarterly, the home is in the middle of a swamp!  If any creepy crawlers come try to hang out with you during your stay, we have bug spray and other repellents available in the screen porch area.  Also, remember to stay vigilant while outdoors and enjoy the nature around you while still staying safe!
